Chemical Name:PVP VA64, Copovidone VA64
Synonyms: Vinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer, Copolyvidone, copovidone, VP/VAc copolymer 60/40
CAS No.: 25086-89-9
CTFA Name:PVP/VA Copolymer
Description: PVP/VA copolymers are primary film formers for a variety of products which demand different degrees of water resistance including aerosol, aqueous, and organic solvent systems. These polymers exhibit film flexibility, good adhesion, luster, water remoistenability, and hardness.
PVP VA64 is manufactured by free-radical polymerisation of 6 parts of N-vinylpyrrolidone and 4 parts of vinyl acetate in isopropanol. The product is supplied as a white or slightly yellowish, free-flowing powder with a faint characteristic odor and a faint taste in aqueous solutions.
PVP VA64 is copolymer of 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate in a ratio of 6:4 by mass. It is White or creamy white powder, and it is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, methylene chloride and glycerol

Applications:
The main application is as soluble binder for granulation and as dry-binder in direct compression technology, as a film-forming agent in sprays and as pore-former in coating and taste-masking applications. Copovidone, such as PVP VA64, has been used for decades in the pharmaceutical industry in Europe. Up to about 1975 it was marketed by basf in Germany, which today is used only for the technical/cosmetic grade of this copolymer. Its applications in details are as follows,
Dry granulation tablet binder
Direct compression tablet binder aid
Wet granulation binder
Film coating additive
Color stabilizer
